The Capital Region packs a lot into a summer Saturday, and plenty of it is free or close to it. Here are three ways to spend a weekend day with the family that everyone will actually enjoy.
1. Spend the day at a county fair
Nothing says Capital Region summer like a county fair, and from mid-August into September you've got your pick. The Altamont Fair (August 18 to 23) is a great place to start, since it's the only fair in New York that represents three counties, and a single low gate admission gets you the Royal Hanneford Circus, a sea lion show, and those famous racing pigs, all included. Want more? The Schoharie County Sunshine Fair in Cobleskill (August 11 to 16) has country star Joe Nichols headlining the grandstand this year and a pay-one-price gate with unlimited rides, and the Washington County Fair in Greenwich (August 24 to 30) is one of the largest in the Northeast if you want the full barns-and-midway experience.

2. Explore the New York State Museum
On a hot or rainy afternoon, the New York State Museum downtown is one of the best free outings in the city. Kids can walk through life-size dioramas, see real mastodon bones, and ride the beautifully restored antique carousel up on the top floor. It's the oldest and largest state museum in the country, and you could spend hours there without spending a dime.
3. Get outside at Washington Park
When the weather cooperates, Washington Park is where Albany goes to relax. Spread a blanket by the lake, let the kids loose on the paths, and if you time it right, catch a free show at Park Playhouse, the outdoor theater that's been putting on Broadway-style musicals in the park for over two decades. Both free lawn seating and paid seating are available, so it fits any budget.
One great Capital Region weekend
Three stops, one very Albany Saturday. Start with a fair while the season's still going, then let the museums and parks fill out the rest. Find the fair nearest you at FindYourFair.com.
