There's a stretch of August in Western New York when it feels like every other town has a Ferris wheel going up and a barn filling with 4-H kids and their animals. County fair season is one of the best things about summer around here, and you're honestly never far from one. Whether you want the giant midway and grandstand concerts or a smaller, down-home fair where the racing pigs are the main event, there's a fair with your name on it within an easy drive of Buffalo. Here are the ones still ahead of us this summer.
Erie County Fair (Hamburg): August 12 to 23
This is the big one. The Erie County Fair is one of the largest county fairs in all of North America, drawing over a million people across a run the fair proudly calls the "Best 12 Days of Summer." The Erie County Agricultural Society dates back to 1819, and the fair has called the Hamburg Fairgrounds home since 1868, so you're stepping into more than 150 years of tradition when you walk through the gate.
The animals are a huge part of it, with around 2,500 of them spread across 16 barns, plus the James E. Strates Shows midway rolling in with more than 70 rides and 100 games. This year's grandstand lineup is stacked. Several shows are free with admission, including a Prince tribute from Marshall Charloff & Purple Xperience on opening night (August 12) and the Marshall Tucker Band the following evening. Ticketed headliners include the Happy Together Tour (August 14), a country night with Joe Nichols, Phil Vassar and Mark Wills (August 15), a '90s throwback bill of Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms with Spin Doctors (August 18), and comedian Jeff Foxworthy (August 19).

Niagara County Fair (Lockport): August 5 to 9
Just up the road in Lockport, the Niagara County Fair puts young exhibitors, local agriculture and community traditions at the center of the experience. Hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County, the fair is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, helping support youth programs, agriculture, education and community initiatives across the county.
The 2026 schedule includes livestock and horse shows, a livestock auction, a tractor parade, the Buffalo Zoo Mobile, live music, puppets and magic, STEAM and robotics activities, mini golf and plenty of family competitions. Visitors can also check out distinctive contests involving pies and brownies, America 250 cookies, garden planters, photography and even 3-D sculptures made from a “Bucket of Junk.”

Cattaraugus County Fair (Little Valley): August 1 to 8
If your idea of a perfect fair day involves free entertainment and a monster truck, point the car toward the Enchanted Mountains. Operating for more than 180 years, the Cattaraugus County Fair is big enough for a monster truck rally, a demolition derby and a rodeo, but small enough that you won't feel overwhelmed by any of it.
The best part might be all the free shows running daily, including the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show and the Swifty Swine Racing Pigs, which are exactly as fun as they sound. And here's the rare deal that gives the fair its reputation: general admission includes the rides, so you're not nickel-and-diming your way through the midway. It's an easy afternoon for the whole family.

Wyoming County Fair (Pike): August 15 to 22
The Pike fair is an old-fashioned country fair through and through, and this year's theme, "Stars, Stripes & Summer Nights," fits it perfectly. You'll find an antique museum, a super cruise car show, tractor and truck pulls, a talent show, and the Firemen's Grande Parade, all alongside the carnival rides and farm animals. There is no individual gate-admission charge; parking is $10 per vehicle, which makes it a low-pressure, high-fun way to close out fair season before Labor Day sneaks up.
