Top 3 Things to Do in Watertown on a Summer Weekend

Watertown sits at the doorstep of the Thousand Islands and some of the prettiest country in the state, which makes for a great family weekend. Here are three ways to spend a Saturday.

1. Spend the day at a county fair

North Country fair season is short and sweet, so catch it while you can. The Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair (August 4 to 9) is the closest to Watertown and a tradition since 1859, with free admission to the grounds, harness racing, and a full midway. A bit farther north, the Franklin County Fair in Malone (August 8 to 16) goes all out this year with concerts from the Gin Blossoms and a Great White / Sebastian Bach rock night, plus a rodeo and a demolition derby, and kids 12 and under get in free.

2. Meet the animals at the New York State Zoo

Right in town at Thompson Park, the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park focuses on animals native to New York, from black bears and bald eagles to bobcats and wolves. It's a compact, kid-friendly zoo with a beautiful hilltop park around it, complete with playgrounds and a spray pad for hot days.

3. Cruise to Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands

You're a short drive from one of the state's most magical spots. Hop a tour boat from Alexandria Bay out into the Thousand Islands and visit Boldt Castle, a real turn-of-the-century castle on its own island. The boat ride alone, weaving past islands and grand summer homes, is worth the trip, and kids love exploring the castle grounds.

One great North Country weekend

Three stops, one memorable Saturday. Start with a fair while the season's on, then let the river and the islands take over. Find the fair nearest you at FindYourFair.com.
